Biological and Ecological Inventories

Triton provides comprehensive inventories of terrestrial and aquatic (freshwater and marine) ecosystems throughout BC. Biological and ecological inventories form the basis for resource management decisions, and provide the baseline for the determination of project effects or effects from perturbations such as climate change. Inventories are typically completed following a set of guidelines that have been developed in a scientific manner (e.g. the Resource Inventory Standards Committee guidelines).

Inventories can be completed at the site-specific scale (e.g. a development property) to address the requirements of legislation such as the Riparian Area Regulation (RAR) or Species and Risk Act (SARA). Inventories can also be completed at a much larger scale (e.g. watershed) to systematically document the extent of a species or community of species where existing information is limited. Data from subsequent inventories completed in a similar systematic manner can be used to determine whether there has been a statistically significant change in the species or community being inventoried.

Our biological and ecological inventory services include:

  • Population surveys and assessments
  • Fisheries and aquatic assessments
  • Riparian Area Regulation (RAR) assessments
  • Marine and freshwater fish habitat assessments
  • Aquatic research planning, implementation and evaluation
  • Species at Risk assessments and surveys
  • Invertebrate population studies and impact assessments
