Senior Biologist
Job Description:
Triton Environmental Consultants Ltd. is seeking a senior level professional to join our successful team of aquatic (freshwater and marine) and terrestrial ecologists/biologists working on a broad range of natural resource projects throughout western Canada. The successful candidate will be part of an accomplished team with a diverse range of skill sets and specializations including: environmental permitting and monitoring, aquatic and terrestrial ecology, natural resource management, ecological restoration and compensation, modeling, hydrology, GIS, land use planning, and invertebrate taxonomy. Our clients include government agencies, First Nations, urban developers, land owners, transportation industries, and natural resource developers such as the oil and gas, forestry, and energy sectors. Areas of growth include the energy sector, water resources, mining, biological monitoring and natural resource markets in western Canada.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Qualifications:
- B.Sc. or M.Sc. is preferred in aquatic (freshwater, estuarine, marine), wetland, and/or terrestrial biology, ecology, restoration biology, or related science.
- Professional designation (e.g., R.P.Bio.) or eligibility to obtain designation upon start of employment
- Ten plus years of relevant professional experience in environmental consulting and/or applied science.
- Strong business/client orientation with proven business development and client relationship skills.
- Must have a demonstrated record for identifying and successfully pursuing new clients and projects.
- Well-developed knowledge of natural resource management issues, programs, and systems of western Canada.
- Recognized professional contributions within and beyond technical peer network.
- Proven experience in staff and project team integration and team building with strong people development skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong problem-solution orientation.
- Ability/willingness to travel to field sites and other Triton office locations.

The ideal candidate will have strong field skills and be able to work independently or lead field crews in completing field assessments as well as provide office support in analysing data, writing reports, and client interaction. Triton provides both in-house and external training opportunities. The successful candidate will find opportunities to be involved in project work through other offices as well as opportunities for advancement, commensurate with demonstrated capability and performance.
Qualifications:
- Five plus years of work experience in aquatic or terrestrial projects.
- Working knowledge of provincial and federal environmental assessment and referral processes.
- Knowledge of regional resources (fish, plants, wildlife), inventory standards and relevant regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and work effectively within teams.
- Strong writing and communications skills.
- B.Sc. or M.Sc. in a relevant field (R.P.Bio. an asset)
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct field surveys to inventory environmental resources (fish, plants, wildlife, ecosystems) and assess impacts to aquatic and terrestrial environments.
- Complete technical reports and assist in proposal preparation.
- Assist with environmental monitoring activities on a variety of small and large projects.
- Client liaison
- Implement mitigation, compensation and restoration plans.
- Operate off-road vehicles or boats as required.
- Operate a broad range of field sampling equipment
Assets:
- Field experience in conducting fish, wildlife and ecosystem inventories
- Proposal and report writing experience
- WCB electrofishing certification
- Valid Level 1 first aid training
- Environmental monitoring & erosion sediment control certification or experience
- Experience navigating using map, compass and air photo

PROFESSIONAL, TECHNICAL AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:
- Environmental technical diploma or degree
- Technical certification (e.g., A.Sc.T., R.B.Tech.)
- At least 3 years of relevant experience including conducting field work
- Ability to work well in a team environment or independently
- Sound judgement and ability to perform in stressful situations
- Physically fit, capable of arduous field work
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Collection of scientific data for fisheries inventory, water quality, and wildlife assessments
- Environmental monitoring of construction projects
- Operation and maintenance of a variety of scientific equipment
- Data management, analyses, and reporting
- Literature reviews
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Field data collection by a variety of techniques according to government standards and guidelines
- Species identification and habitat descriptions
- Topographic surveying and stream channel measurement
- Water quality sampling, including operation of water quality meters
- Sample collection, labelling, shipping and documentation
- Current safety and electrofishing certification
- Good communication (oral, written, and listening) skills
